He is now a qualified Financial Adviser at Stewart Group, with extensive experience in banking for National Australia Bank and Wells Fargo Bank in Melbourne.
Taraia grew up in Clive, Hawke’s Bay, with a rich Māori heritage. His iwi are Ngāti Kahungunu (father) with Kohupatiki Marae, and Ngāti Porou (mother) with Omahu Marae in Fernhill and connections in Waipiro Bay near Gisborne. His maternal grandfather served in the 28th Māori Battalion - C Company during WWII, and his great-grandfather, Ihakara Te Tuku Rapana (Ike Robin), was the Australasian heavyweight champion in 1926 who was recognised as the 7th greatest wrestler in 2009.
A Lindisfarne College alumnus, Taraia excelled in sports, earning colours in cricket, rugby, basketball and athletics. He represented New Zealand at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka in 1999-2000 and trained at the New Zealand Cricket Academy. Unfortunately, an injury ended his cricket career, but that didn’t stop him from bringing his sportsmanship and dedication to everything he does.

In his free time, Taraia enjoys family time, exploring Hawke’s Bay and staying active in the local sports community. His dedication to both his professional and personal life makes him a valued member of the Stewart Group and the Hawke’s Bay community.
